13.11.25 Backup beds

Image
Have been creating backup beds for budded seedlings. I also added a couple of big-sized seedlings which (I guess) will grow well on own roots: Penny Lane x Unknown White Rambler, OP of Erinnerung an Brod, OP of R. moschata and one multiflora hybrid. Every rose here will be covered with fir branches for winter. I will think about adding mulch in spring.  The bed with own-root seedlings selected for further propagation needs more protection, so I put a net around it. Still needs a few improvements. Of course I am not sure if it can help. But at least it will make it harder for voles to play their games here if they come from above the ground.

10.11.25 Seedlings moved

Image
One of my seedlings beds finally got ready. Seedlings were moved to this bed from different places to be kept together. Mostly these are original seedlings of different years which already have been propagated and also those to be propagated in the nearest future.  In addition, there are few seedlings which were pre-selected, but not yet decided to propagate. They will be just obsereved.  Now it is time to move the budded seedlings from the propagation bed to the back-up bed. I have started this little project already. Will be finished soon, I hope, as there are not too many roses to move.

3.11.25 Harvesting rose seeds

Actually, I began to harvest achenes in september. But now the quantities are increasing.  I am doing 7-10 hips per day. The achenes are extracted, washed in hydrogen peroxide (3%), then washed in water and stored at + 4C in ziplock bags, wrapped in a moist tissue. I expect them all done untill the end of this month.
